Adam’s Camp Hoops for Hope
In what may be the only basketball game in March where the score is irrelevant, the winners of the 4th Annual Adam’s Camp Hoops for Hope event on Sunday, March 20 at the Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood were children, young adults with special needs and their families who will benefit from the more than $50,000 the event raised for Adam’s Camp.
Hoops for Hope was an afternoon of fun with the centerpiece a celebrity basketball game between the “No Limits Lions” coached by former NBA and NCAA coach Bill Ficke and Miss Colorado USA Caley-Rae Pavillard and the “Can Do Cougars” coached by former Denver Nuggets great Bill Hanzlik. Campers were joined on the court by Broncos ring-of-famer Tom Nalen, former Denver Nuggets Ervin Johnson and Mike Evans, former MLB pitcher Mark Knudson, sportscasters Aaron Matas and Jahmai Webster and physicians from Partners in Pediatrics. Former Colorado Rockies and Denver Nuggets announcer Jeff Kingery was on hand to call the action.
The game was a back and forth affair and the final score was a bit of a mystery as both teams bribed the scorer’s table to pad their scores, and some baskets scored more points than others. Instead of worrying about which team won or lost, spotlight firmly shined instead on entertaining the crows of 300-plus spectators and making sure the Adam’s Campers who took part had a chance to make a basket.
Besides the game, Bernie the Saint Bernard mascot from the Colorado Avalanche and Chip the Buffalo from the University of Colorado were on hand to play with the crowd. Peak Athletics Cheerleading and Dance held a pregame cheer clinic and halftime performance and the Gold Crown Field House hosted a full court “activity zone” with games for youngsters. Spectators also had the chance to bid on more than 75 silent auction items that included autographed sports memorabilia, sports and concert tickets and other experiences.
So while it might have been missing the madness of a last-second buzzer beater, Adam’s Camp will take the word of one of our game participants, 15-year-old Devin McEntee, who screamed as the clock hit 0:00, “This was the best game EVER!”
